Blog Activity #16B — “Respect for Cultural Differences”

May 8th, 2006 by stjohns

I came across an article about a a Filipino student who lives and goes to school in Montreal, Canada. Like most Filipinos, the student, Luc, eats with a spoon and fork. One day during lunch in school, a Canadian adult who watches over students as they eat, walked over to Luc and told him that using a spoon and fork is disgusting. The adult also said that if Luc wants to continue eating with his friends, he should use a fork and knife like all Canadians do. The principal of the school defended the adult’s actions and told Luc’s parents that if Luc doesn’t stop eating like a pig (referring to the spoon and fork), he cannot sit with the rest of his classmates.

  • What do you think of this issue?
  • How do you feel about this?
  • You recently studied about Canada. Why do you think the adult and the principal acted this way? How would you feel if you were Luc?
  • What would you do if you were Luc?
  • Continue thinking about this incident and write about what’s wrong with the whole thing.
  • Would you want to be in a school like this?
  • Do you know what discrimination is?
  • Have you discriminated against someone? How? Is this still going on?
  • Do you feel you have been discriminated against in the past? How? Is this still going on?
  • What would you do if you feel you have been discriminated by somebody?
  • Do you have friends from ethnic backgrounds that are different from yours?
  • Do you feel that they have to be like you for them to continue being your friends?
  • Do you feel you have to change ways that are common to your ethnic background so that your friends will keep on being your friends?
